D5000 undocumented Depth of field preview feature

Yesterday after using my D5000 about one year and after more than 25000! shots, I found a new interesting feature: There is a Depth of field preview -button in my D5000 !!
I think this is not a bug but a feature that should have been documented.
How does Depth of field preview work with D5000 (perhaps it works same way with D90?):
1.Select the aperture (f)
2.Press Lv -button
It is that simple !!
I was surprised: in Live View the lens is not fully open but it keeps that aperture (f) that was selected ...

OK so I am relatively new to the dslr world... Just getting my adaptall mount for my old tamron 52b 90mm lens last night and playing around with various settings, I was shocked to notice in live view when adjusting the aperture ring my DOF was visible in live view.. I was just looking at some text and at 2.5 most of the text was OOF except for the very center, but as I moved the ring up all the text became readable around 11-16... Am I crazy or is this just a hidden secret of live view??? d5000 DOF preview live mode with MF lenses????

I was testing out various camera's in Best Buy. The Canon T3 showed me DOF in the viewfinder with a smaller aperture, but for some reason I couldn't see it on the Nikon's they had. It might have just been me, since I'm so new to DSLR (D5000 would most likely be my first DSLR).
I know it doesn't have a DOF button, but does it show DOF in the viewfinder ? Does the D5000 not have DOF preview in viewfinder ?

I would like some feedback on my first good shot that has a shallow DOF. I haven't edited it at all, its the original JPEG from my D5000 with the kit 18-55. Let me know how I did, and what I can do to go in the right direction with my shooting! My first attempt at DOF with my D5000

I've been taking photos of my kids in the neighborhood riding their bikes and scooters, attempting to create a shallow DOF to wash out the background.
As I understand it, I should try to keep the aperture open as big as possible to minimize the DOF.
With the following photos, I've tried two photos at maximum focal length (55 mm) with the aperture as open as possible for this length ( 5.6 ).
I had the camera set to continuous auto-focus, point, and tracked my son as he approached the ramp. The first photo I get a slight amount of blur to the background, but the focus ... *beginner* D5000 with kit 18-55, help with DOF

Yes, it looks that D90 is like D5000 with Live View.

Yesterday, when I was experimenting with the Depth of Field Preview button (using the 35mm 1.8 lens) the camera made a pretty loud clacking noise. It was almost as if the mirror was repeatedly going up and down, over and over. I think I even remember the focus light going on and off as well. It did that twice when pressing the button. I was so distracted by this, I didn't check to see if the feature was actually working properly in the viewfinder. On other tries, the feature seemed to work ...
