The Hasselblad H4D-200MS medium-format digital SLR camera is capable of creating 200-megapixel photos. Designed for studio photographers, the H4D-200MS features a 50-megapixel sensor and adopts the multi-shot technology to produce a 200-megapixel image. A piezoelectric motor slightly moves the sensor, while the camera takes six images of a scene. It takes around 30 seconds to capture and stitch the six pictures into a 600MB, 200MP image. The H4D-200MS uses an extension of the company's sensor-shift, multi-shot (MS) technology to create a 200 megapixel file from six images taken at slight offsets. It can also use the four-shot mode used by the H4D-50MS that shifts the sensor by one pixel in each direction to capture all colors at each position. PETAPIXELuses a special Foveon sensor that captures red, green, and blue information at each pixel by stacking three separate 15MP sensors, giving the resulting images 46 million pieces of information. Hasselblad’s new H4D-200MS medium format DSLR also captures each of the three colors at every pixel, but with a different method — it shoots 6 separate photos with its 50MP sensor, but shifts the sensor by 1.5 pixels for each shot, giving the resulting photos 200MP of resolution.

That’s a gigapixel camera — a supercamera that may sooner than later coming to a retail store near you. In the gigapixel camera are 98 identical microcameras, each with its own set of optics and a 14-megapixel sensor. Do the maths: 98 * 14MP = 1372MP. These microcameras all receive their light through a single large lens. The firmware stitches together all the partial images each microcamera takes into a giant, one-gigapixel image.

Hasselblad announced its plans for a 200-Megapixel camera, slated for a 2011 release. Being a Hasselblad, it’s going to cost more than most photographers can afford. Besides that, it has another gotcha. It turns out that it takes about 30 seconds of capture time to get the full 200-Megapixel photo. Why? Hasseblad is set to reduce the price on the H4D cameras, by as much as $11,000 / 6,200 Euros on the H4D-60 bringing the price to 23,900 euros ($30,995 / £21,995). Under the revised pricing structure the H4D-31 (incl. 35-90mm lens) has been reduced by 3,565 euros to 11,995 euros, the H4D-40 is reduced by 1,000 euros; the H4D-50 by 3,000 euros; the H4D-50MS by 3,000 euros; the H4D-200MS by 4,500 euros and the CFV-50 Digital Back by 2,000 euros.
