The Sony NEX-7 is a new compact system camera with a long list of photographer-friendly features. Offering a 24.3 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, 1080p HD movies, high-res 3 inch tilting screen, 10fps burst shooting, built-in electronic viewfinder and pop-up flash, the NEX-7 seems to be on paper at least a very exciting proposition. Canon EOS-M is out but you don’t have to buy that camera to use EOS lenses! Metabones just updated the EF Lens to E Mount Smart Adapter (Source: Dpreview). It supports electronic communication between the lens and your NEX camera. There is a Metabones review on the NEX-FS100 by EosHD if you want to learn more about it!

So I took my new Nex-7 out for a weekend trip to a Fair and the Zoo. After some use, there are a few things the I hate about the camera. First, the modal nature of the camera. I hate how features and settings are locked out unless your in a certain mode. I really needed the HDR function but could not figure out how to activate it until I got home. Apparently you can only use it while shooting jpegs. On that subject, I shoot Raw+Jpeg so that I can use the Jpegs as thumbnails. It would be nice ... If you download the Sony Q1 financial report (.pdf) you will see that Sony is still loosing money (particularly in the TV business). But there is one good news. They are no writing Black results in the Imaging division. Sony writes:
“Sales increased 7.6% year-on-year (a 12% increase on a constant currency basis) to 193.8 billion yen (2,453 million U.S. dollars). This increase was primarily due to a significant increase in sales of interchangeable single lens cameras reflecting higher demand…”

(Sorry, the title of this post might not be very appropriate, in light of the previous one. Nothing beyond the figurative expression intended.)
I love cameras, and for the most part I love using them—I even dream about using them, sometimes. And after struggling for years to commit to just one, I've given that up and now own a number of cameras. (I really do need to put a few of the less-exercised ones up on Ebay.)
Seldom, however, do cameras "grab me" like the NEX-7 did the other day. I just took ...

The new Sony 35mm f/1.8 lens is as big (or as small) as the 30mm Sigma lens you see here on top.
Super trusted sources just shared a next good news! A new 35mm f/1.8 lens for NEX will be announced along the new NEX-5R and NEX-6 cameras in September! And as I told you before of course along the 16-50mm and 11-18 pancake(!) lenses. I have been told that this lens has the size of the current Sigma 30mm f/2.8 lens…yes same size but it is faster! And it’s a lot smaller than the current 50mm f/1.8 tele ...

I've been shooting video on the NEX-7 for several months now, and it is capable of giving you nice files in many circumstances. I especially like shooting 1080p60 and conforming it to 24fps; the slo-mo is really nice. The trick is, the AVCHD 2.0 compression has no latitude to speak of. Make sure you nail the exposure.PETAPIXEL

At JimBuchananSpace you can find the pictures and description of the new NEX-7 Palm Grip. Smart Idea!
Chris Townsend posted his personal NEX-7 review: “Is the Sony NEX 7 the best camera for backpacking and hiking? I don’t know. It must be one of the best though, given the low weight and bulk and high image quality. It’s definitely a camera for photographers who want the best results and who are likely to make large prints or have images published.”

My friend Kevin Kallenbach at Mike Crivello's Camera in Brookfield (the Milwaukee suburb next to the older small town where I live) bought himself a NEX-7, and showed me the store's stock unit yesterday.
I had an extremely positive first impression. Granted, this is only from handling it in a camera store—and, also granted, I might have been influenced by the steady stream of admiring and positive comments from Kevin, standing next to me talking quietly about his own experiences as I looked the camera ...
